One key to career planning is being open to all roles but first make sure you have sufficient time to commit to your job search. Remember, even if you have an initial reservation about a job description, interviews are often an opportunity for you to evolve a role and adapt it to your skills and strengths.

- Do you want to work: part-time, flexi time, freelance, job share?
Writing your CV
Because you never get a second chance at first impressions
To provide the best chance of securing an interview, ensure your CV accurately sells your experience.
- Check for spelling and grammar keeping in mind to use the UK spelling. If a CV has typing errors it shows a lack of attention to detail.
- Double check all dates.
- Ensure qualifications are accurate. Please note some clients may request qualification certificates.
- Keep it simple - use bullets, tabs and bold to make it easy to read.
- Avoid using computer graphics and photos.
- Choose a clear font such as Arial, no smaller than 11pt.
- Your CV should be clear and concise, limit it to two pages.
- Include your name, postal & email address and contact telephone numbers (home, work, mobile).
- A personal statement is a brief personal summary given to prospective employers to help you stand apart from the competition. This is your opportunity to sell your skills and experience, who are you, what makes you different and what are your career goals.
- You should always aim to edit your personal statement for each role you apply for. That way, you can ensure you’re really selling yourself to their role, rather than simply sending the same generic statement for each application. If you imagine sometimes client's see lots of CV's, this needs to entice the reader into the rest of your CV.
Education/ Professional qualifications and skills
- Listed chronologically, detail school and university/college qualifications, including grades and dates.
- State all professional qualifications and recent courses attended.
- Additionally, specify your IT skills, foreign languages and any other skills of interest with your relevant level of proficiency.
Begin with your current/most recent position, including the name of the company and nature of the business.
State your job title and the dates you were employed. Describe your responsibilities, duties and main achievements. Quantify your examples with precise facts and figures. Remember, your last role is what an Employer is really interested in so make sure it is easy to read and ideally on the first page.
Don't leave any employment gaps, ensuring all your time is accountable. It is advisable to explain if you have switched jobs frequently or travelled.
Be specific. Your interests say something about your personality. Be prepared to answer questions on your interests; don't list things for the sake of it.
There is no need to include references on your CV, simply write 'References available on request.’

Perfecting your Interview Skills
You will be fully briefed by your Crone Corkill consultant before any interview. However, you can never be too prepared. Here are some top tips:
Research and be prepared
- If you are knowledgeable about the company you are interviewing with, you will come across as proactive and committed.
- Visit the company website, including their press centre, for up-to-date information.
- Read the company brochure/annual report.
- Keep an eye on the business press for any relevant industry articles.
- Research who you are meeting. You may be able to find information on LinkedIn profile, Google search or Wikipedia.
Before the interview, familiarise yourself with the role. Consider the key skills and experience necessary for the assignment, thinking of examples that highlight your own strengths in each area.
For all the examples you give, consider the situation, the action you took and the positive effect it had. For example, if confidence is important to the role the interviewer will be looking for you to substantiate with examples of your own confidence. The line of questioning could include:
- Give an example of when you challenged a decision made by your peers/Managers.
- What factors did you take into consideration before challenging this decision?
- What action was taken by your peers/Managers?
- What was the outcome?
Be prepared to talk in more detail about your CV experience and how it can be applied to the new role. If you have gaps in your CV, make sure you can give positive explanations such as travel, school, maternity leave, etc.
Plan your journey
Aim to arrive 10 minutes early. Obtain clear directions and plan your route in advance. If you are delayed for any reason, contact your consultant immediately who will phone the client on your behalf.
Remember to leave plenty of time for the interview itself.
First impressions last
A client is likely to want someone who will best represent their company so dress smartly and professionally. A suit is usually advisable unless otherwise advised by your consultant.
Consider the following:
- A firm handshake demonstrates you are assertive.
- Smiling says, "I'm friendly and enthusiastic".
- Regular eye contact shows you are confident and alert.
- Avoid appearing nervous by maintaining an open stance, as well as refraining from folding your arms and fidgeting.
The interviewer will take the lead, which you should follow, both in the direction of the interview and its tone.
Bear the following guidelines in mind:
- Concentrate and listen very carefully to the questions.
- Take time to formulate a clear and concise answer. Feel free to ask for a question to be repeated if you do not understand or for more time to answer, if required. Provide only factual experiences or qualifications.
- Speak confidently and remember to sell yourself.
- Do not appear negative by criticising any previous employers or seem unfocused by showing a lack of career planning.

Testing is becoming an increasingly regular occurrence as part of the recruiting process. Testing can vary from IT/ in tray exercises to psychometrics or full day assessments. Your consultant will advise you if testing is required.
Should you not possess either a British/EU country passport or Dual citizenship, and you plan to work during your stay in the UK, you will need to obtain a work visa or permit prior to your arrival in the country. The type of visa or work permit you require will depend upon your individual circumstances.Crone Corkill does not provide a work permit advisory service and it is strongly recommended that you seek advice from the UK embassy in your home country.
